Humanities and social sciences in Israel have been increasingly using computational methods. Gradually, they are organizing into a community that shares various methods used to investigate an increased variety of materials, including not only old and new texts but also images, sounds, and videos. However, much remains to be done to consolidate this community in order to develop tools and research collaboratively, especially beyond the Social Sciences\/Humanities divide.<\/p>

The first conference of Digital Humanities and Social Sciences (DHSS) in Israel aims to precisely work in this direction: stimulating innovations and collaborations while also collectively contemplating the larger epistemological implications of the shift to digital methods<\/p>

The conference will be built around multidisciplinary panels presenting research, including work in progress and research projects, offering an opportunity to meet colleagues and introduce new researchers and graduate students to the field. The conference is designed to encompass as wide a range of disciplines as possible and explore a variety of research objects and, more broadly, what it means to conduct research in the social sciences and humanities in an increasingly digitized universe, within and beyond the academia.<\/p>

If you work with data in Python, odds are you use Pandas.<\/p>

There are, however, other dataframe libraries out there: DuckDB, datatable, Dask, etc.<\/p>

Polars is one of these libraries. It is super fast, with a consistent and intuitive API (inspired by pyspark).<\/p>

For some users (myself included), Polars has completely replaced Pandas.<\/p>

In this workshop, I will benchmark Polars with Pandas and numpy, to convince you it is indeed orders of magnitude faster than Pandas.<\/p>

We will then get acquainted with the API: The design principles, useful functions, etc.<\/p>

I will be assuming prior knowledge of Python and Pandas.<\/p>

I will be sharing code beforehand, so you can follow with your laptop, print beforehand, or just listen and re-run the code at your<\/p>

We are excited to share a major milestone in the Make Data Count initiative:\u00a0the first release of the Data Citation Corpus<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.

There is a pressing need to understand how open data is used, but we have lacked a resource to access this information in a centralized and open manner. The Data Citation Corpus aims to address this challenge by providing a comprehensive resource that brings together data citations from a variety of sources.<\/p>

Thanks to the collaboration between DataCite and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, the corpus brings together for the first time citations for datasets with DOIs and accession numbers. The first release of the corpus includes over eight million data citations, available to the community via a data citation store and an interactive dashboard<\/a>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Last July (2023), several heads of DS research centers visited Germany on a special visit to several AI ecosystems, such as government institutions, AI research centers, and technology transfer companies\/institutions.
